Funding Opportunities

Dry Bean Incentive Awards for Researchers

The Dry Bean Health Research Program (DBHRP) is a targeted research incentive program designed to attract federal funds to research on dry beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) and human health. It was begun in 2008 by the Northarvest Bean Growers Association. Researchers from across the nation are invited to apply for one of five $20,000 incentive awards given to applicants who submit health research proposals deemed by a peer review panel to be of highest merit. Selected researchers then must apply to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for funding of research grants with budgets of at least $150,000 per year for three years.

DBHRP incentive awards are made based on researcher qualifications and the strength of the proposed research. Applications with a focus on cardiovascular disease, obesity, colon cancer, GI health, immune system, and diabetes are targeted.

The proposal deadline for 2012 has not been established yet, but is expected to be in mid-September. Selected researchers will then be required to submit a complete application to NIH for the February 2013 cycle to receive the $20,000 award.
